Secara fisik yang terlihat Sony SLT-A37 yang baru ini hampir serupa dengan A57 pada jajaran model kamera yang lebih mahal yang berada di di atasnya dalam hirarki Sony. Seperti pendahulunya, A37 membagi dengan jendela bidik optik yang mendukung versi elektronik, dan menggunakan mirror semi-transparan yang tetap bukan yang bergerak mirror non-translucent seperti pada kamera DSLR. translucency mirror pada A37 bertujuan agar cahaya yang cukup dapat melewati sensor untuk memungkinkan tetap berada setiap saat, dengan kemampuan untuk merefleksikan sejumalah cahaya ke sebuah phase-detection auto-fokus array berada di bagian atas body A37. Penggabungan ini berarti bahwa A37 bisa memberikan full-time DSLR-seperti kecepatan fokus, bahkan pada saat perekaman video, plus sistem Live View yang sangat baik dengan 100% jangkauan dan tingkat kecepatan pengambilan gambar objek secara terus menerus dari 7fps, sementara secara ukuran fisik lebih kecil dan lebih ringan daripada DSLR yang sekelas.
